Birthday and Christmas Presents

I always loved opening presents with Moira. From the moment she first started laughing and enjoying the sound and feel of crinkly paper, I've always made sure to wrap her presents in a way that makes opening even a pair of socks exciting. But before we get to that, buying presents for Moira was an experience. When she was young, I would walk into a toy shop, find a display of toys, close my eyes and pick up, squeeze, shake and basically play with all the toys until something made me laugh, or really caught my attention. The number of shop attendants I had to explain what I was doing! Some would look confused, some would just walk away but most would be really enthusiastic and would come up with some good ideas. One of my favourite shopping memories is finding the Dino-Roar (see in the photos). It was after a day at school, I went Birthday present shopping for Mo. Just walking around Woolworths with a school friend, Corey, I got to the toy section. I closed my eyes and Corey guided me towards the toy section. I just started picking up toys and the third one was soft, I gave it a squeeze and this bizarre squeal/roar sounded. Corey and I just burst out laughing. After making this plush dinosaur roar for a while I went to buy it still laughing. Even got the cashier laughing. I wrapped the present in crinkly paper with loops and tassels so Moira had plenty of things to grab and rip off. In what became a normal occurrence, I helped Moira unwrap her present on her birthday. She was enjoying the crinkly paper and we all were cheering when she ripped a large section of the paper off, thenI helped her squeeze the present while still wrapped, the dino roared. Moira burst out laughing as did the rest of us. While the dino-roar wasn't her favourite toy, for that moment on her birthday alone, it was perfect. I tried to make sure for all Moira's birthdays and Christmases, I would wrap her presents in unusual and different ways to make the unwrapping experience as interesting as possible and I must admit, it was always a fun project for me too. Moira always rewarded any effort you spent on her. Even if it was a little thing like holding her hand while walking through town our while in the car or a major thing like devoting time to help her learn how to move her feet, Moira’s joy and love was the reward.
