Bowling

2002

I have no idea if 2002 is even close to the correct year, but it is of little importance. Whichever year it was, I was making my way around England on my own for the first time. Of all the wonderful things I did over those unforgettable couple of weeks, one of the most memorable moments occurred in little Tunbridge Wells. The bowling alley was a very busy place; children, parents, and staff, all running around the lanes adding excitement to this wonderful world. I remember looking at Moira as we entered the building and seeing her light up more than the bowling alley itself. The sounds of the rolling balls and pins crashing to the floor was music to her ears. It was as if all the fluorescent lights warmed her soul and electrified her with excitement. Her first turn was unforgettable. The face I saw as we entered the building had now been amplified by the complete satisfaction she was experiencing. The smile on her face practically screamed delight. The teenaged staff worker cleaning everyone’s smelly bowling shoes would have even been smiling ear to ear if they saw the pleasure on Moira's face. As the game continued and the points went on, Moira enjoyed every turn just the same. With each roll down the ramp, the sound of her bowling ball crashing onto the smooth hardwood floor amazed her beyond belief. She had the ability to enjoy every little part of the game, parts of the game I didn't even think twice about. The feel of the holes in the ball, the sound of the television monitor displaying the scores... Moira loved absolutely everything about being there and I loved being there with her. Now living an ocean away didn't exactly make seeing Moira easy, and maybe if I lived closer I'd have many more memories to share, but this day in my mind truly captures the essence of Moira's personality, her strength, and her love for those around her. It is simple moments such as these which we should remember this wonderful girl, for they hold the love she cherished before all else. Stu (Mo's cousin).
